Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the censorship process.
While the former president's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
However, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that included little previously unseen information.
