In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
