The UK and US have finalized a important bilateral deal that will guarantee no tariffs on UK drug products going into the US market.
In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has agreed to increase funding on medicines through the public health system. This pledge guarantees that tariffs on these vital exports will remain at nothing for a duration of three years.
This deal follows previous threats to significantly raise duties on branded pharmaceutical products, with potential rates floated reaching 100%.
"This arrangement between the United Kingdom bolsters the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and brings long-overdue balance to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," an announcement declared.
Medicines represent one of the the United Kingdom's biggest exports to the United States, which is clearly the biggest destination for major British pharmaceutical firms.
Trade data show that in the 12 months leading up to September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products totaling £11.1bn to the US. This amount made up a significant portion of British export trade in that span.
"This agreement safeguards jobs, increases investment and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a global hub for biotech and pharma," a minister commented.
The pact involves several specific changes from the British government:
The pact takes place against a ongoing tension between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over drug pricing and NHS adoption.
These tensions were heightened by assertions that US patients were charged a premium for the same drugs than patients in the UK and Europe.
Over the last 18 months, several major pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while major investments have been announced toward US facilities.
The Science Minister stated that the NHS must increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a share of its total funding over the past decade.
